Opera Software officially released Opera 10 last Tuesday, which features a refined visual interface, the Turbo compression technology, a customisable Speed Dial, and more. Now that I have been actively using the official Opera 10 release for about a week, I thought it was time for a quick review. If you are interested in the specifics of Opera 10's new features, please check out my earlier blog post about Opera 10 Beta. Overall, there are three specific things I really like about Opera 10: the new skin, the inline spell checker, and the up…

Opera Software have today launched Opera Unite, an innovative technology that allows users to share files, photos, music, and more without the use of a third-party service. Using web-server-like technology, users share data across the Internet without uploading files to an intermediary service, such as Flickr or MobileMe. Users install "services" that are built from traditional web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX), which they can broadcast out to friends and family. Opera have released an initial suite of services: File Shari…

Opera Software have yesterday released Opera 10 Beta, a preview of the next version of the Opera web browser. For the average consumer, this beta release includes a redesigned interface (by the infamous designer Jon Hicks), built-in Opera Turbo support, the ability to compose rich-HTML emails (in Opera Mail), inline spell checking, and auto updates. They have also introduced a visual tab display that can be accessed by pulling down the adjustable bar beneath the tabs. You can find complete changelogs on Opera's documentation website: Windows…

About a month ago, Opera announced Opera Turbo. Opera Turbo is a piece of software that runs on the Opera server in between you and the Internet. It compresses website data by as much as 80% and then sends you the results to be displayed in Opera. The technology is already used in Opera Mini, where it can compress a standard web page (with images) down to around 7KB, which loads quite quick, even on a standard mobile connection. Originally it was thought that Opera were only going to licence the technology to third parties, who would then i…

There are a lot of web browsers on the market today, with a lot of marketing text and hidden agendas clouding any real evaluation of each browser. Even at Lowter, we heavily lean towards Opera. All of the graphs and speed tests are the worst, with each data set showing almost entirely different results, always skewed towards a particular browser. However, I found a great article on Maximum PC that gives a pretty detailed and fair review of the major browsers on the market. It compares the browsers on the rendering engine, the user interfa…

Some cool news came from Opera Software this week, who announced partnerships with both Yahoo! and Vodafone. First, Yahoo! Mobile is going to include an integrated version of Opera Mini, allowing the application's users to access the Internet directly. Second, Opera have developed a custom version of Opera Mini for Vodafone aimed at low- and mid-priced mobile phones. Both of these announcements are exciting endeavours for Opera that will bring their mobile browser to even more users around the globe. The interesting news to me is the part…

Why Browser Sniffing Sucks

Since I now have most of my family using Opera, I am hearing more and more about browser sniffing issues with Opera. They tell me that some website will not work for them, so I investigate the issue and, after telling Opera to identify itself as a different browser, I get into the website fine without any rendering or scripting issues to be found. Really, browser sniffing has no place on the web whatsoever. Why would you deny users access when their browser can render the website perfectly? Now, there are cases where browser sniffing is a…

As many of you may have guessed by now, we are pretty big fans of the Opera web browser here at Lowter. We certainly like Opera for its solid set of features, but especially for its superior web standards support. A new Opera version is always exciting for me because of the constant improvement of Opera on all levels. Two days ago, Opera released Opera 10.0 Alpha 1 for Windows, Mac OS, and UNIX. The biggest improvement is the upgrade of the Presto rendering engine of Opera, which now passes the Acid3 Test. Here are all of the maj…

Opera Mini Never Submitted to Apple

The New York Times' blogger Saul Hansell has reported a clarification about Opera and the iPhone. He went and further questioned Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, Opera's chief executive, about Opera Mini and the iPhone for extra clarity: He said that the development of the iPhone browser was more an "internal project" of some engineers than a product that management was committed to introducing. Indeed, development was halted after the company looked at the details of the license agreement in Apple's software development kit and realized th…

Last week there were a number of reports on the Internet about Opera's mobile browser being rejected from Apple's iPhone App Store. To clarify, Apple apparently rejected Opera Mini, not Opera Mobile. I guess some people were confused and didn't realise that Opera has two mobile browsers. Apparently, Opera Mini was rejected because it was running a Java ME runtime on the iPhone, although this is only speculation. This of course violates the iPhone's SDK agreement. Still, if Opera were to redevelop Opera Mini using the C API, Apple would pro…

I sometimes feel like I write too much about Opera, but I couldn't really pass this article up! Opera have just released a large report that attempts to document the current state of the webpages that make up the World Wide Web. The report is called MAMA (Metadata Analysis and Mining Application) and it uses a large set of URLs (3,509,180 URLs in 3,011,668 domains) to generate statistics about the current state of webpages on the Internet. The report details many different aspects of the Internet, including what server software the website u…

This blog post was originally going to be about the new features of Opera 9.6 and how much I like them. However, I spotted a major flaw with one of the new features and luckily it's a flaw that anyone can fix with a little bit of modification. One of the great new features of Opera 9.6 is that it will show a styled page when it comes across an RSS or Atom feed, which makes it readable to humans. It then has a big button that you press to subscribe to the feed. It's a great little feature... assuming you use the built-in feed reader. The …

The Choose Opera blog posted a funny little chart about typical web browser users of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Apple Safari. It is funny, especially the Apple Safari row, but the chart also has a little accuracy in my opinion. IE users are generally either not informed or stubborn about switching to a better browser. Opera users tend to be a little elitist, but only because they're using the better browser (I do use Opera myself). Power users of Apple Safari are almost certainly using it for the "Private Browsing" feature, …

When you search for "opera mini iphone" on Google, you get tons of results arguing why Opera Mini is better than the iPhone's Safari web browser. Now, with the introduction of third-party applications for the iPhone, my question is: when will Opera Mini be on the iPhone? Opera's codebase is suppose to be easy to adapt to new platforms, according to Opera Software, as we see with Opera on the Wii for example. I seriously hope that Opera Software is planning on releasing a version of Opera Mini for the iPhone, but I would understand if the…

A few days ago, the latest version of the Opera web browser was released: Opera 9.5. I've been a massive fan of Opera for a while now. The feature set is great out of the box (mouse gestures, tabs that work the way I expect them to, and the speed dial, just to name a few) and the speed is great. With the latest release comes many further enhancements: Opera Link: Your bookmarks, Speed Dial and even notes taken in the Opera browser can follow you anywhere. Opera Link keeps you synchronized between any Opera 9.5 desktop browser and Opera …

Cool Opera Feature

After using Opera for almost two years, I thought that there were no more little features that I had not found. However, I have recently found the single coolest feature so far: dragging tabs outside the Opera window. I do not know if it is just me who has not found this feature; so do not hang me if it is a commonly used one. This feature is really useful because if you do not have the Opera window maximised then you cannot drag tabbed windows outside the edges of the main browser window. This can be very annoying if you want to watch a …

Today Opera Software released Opera 9.2, an update to their web browser. In addition to bug and security fixes, the update adds a new feature known as Speed Dial and a handy set of developer tools. I have played around a bit with the Speed Dial feature and overall I really like it. At first I was skeptical of another feature in Opera, but this one is rather subtle overall. The Speed Dial is seen instead of the blank page/tab that you would normally see. Essentially, it is a quick method to access the sites you visit commonly, with a nice…

The latest weekly build of Opera 9 - build 8265 - passes the Acid2 web-standards test. This puts Opera as the second web browser to completely pass the Acid2 test, with Safari being the first. Other browsers, such as Konqueror and iCab, partially pass the Acid2 test, but not completely. You can download the latest weekly build at the Opera Lab's website.…

It was expected for some time, but now it happened. Opera 8.50 is available for free. If you were always put back by the advertisements, you lost that excuse. The menu structure should be nearly similar with the exception of registration related issues, so it wouldn't take much time to adjust custom menu setups. "Today we invite the entire Internet community to use Opera and experience Web browsing as it should be," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "Removing the ad banner and licensing fee will encourage many new users to d…

Today the new version of the MyOpera community site launched. This new version doesn't only feature a completely new design, it also features a lot of new features. There are still forums and weblogs, but now you can also keep a gallery and a website with 300 MB of space to use! (Well, that means customising the CSS, which is all you need to completely revamp the look.) Users can now organize into groups and record more of information about themselves, managing subscriptions to forum topics is easier, there's a quick oversight of your mos…

Opera Software today launched a technical preview (TP) of the Opera browser for Windows, Linux and Mac that includes support for BitTorrent. Integrating this popular file-downloading technology in the Opera browser offers the end user a faster download process by utilizing full bandwidth and reducing the chance of in-transfer delay when multiple users download the same file. While BitTorrent has been on Opera's radar screen for more than a year, the true value of the technology became evident when the company launched Opera 8 in April thi…

Ever wished that you could take your browser of choice wherever you go? That way you don't have to use Internet Explorer? I've found methods to get both Opera and Firefox on a thumb drive. Both work fine and make a nice way to have a good browser with you at all times. Opera megamanXplosion at Sitepoint.com posted some great instructions on how to get Opera on your thumb drive. Haavard, public relations of Opera had the following to tell. We've been on a winning streek lately, German magazine Chip concluding that Opera is better than Firefox and all. It seems that in the excitement over the positive press lately in combination with 8.01 release preparations, and with the summer heat finally arriving in Oslo, we've screwed up. At closer inspection, it appears that Opera might not have won the best browser of 2005 award from PC World after all. Opera is listed as the only browser in the "Web" category, which I g…

A few days ago Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software, said: I will swim from Norway to the USA if download numbers of Opera 8 reach 1 million in four days Further the official press release said: Opera has now installed additional servers with increased capacity, and it was the download counter showing 600 000 downloads in 48 hours that sparked Mr Tetzschner's enthusiasm and thus his courageous promise to boldly swim where no man has swum before. "I am not sure he realizes how cold the Norwegian Sea is in April," says Anne Stavne…

Adobe GoLive CS2 is out. What does this offer? It uses Presto (Opera's rendering engine) for the WYSIWYG interface. This is great news in various aspects. First, according to some (including myself) Presto is the best rendering engine out there. Second, because this software is easy to use everybody can do his thing with this and create a standards supporting web without even realising it! (in Dreamweaver as well, but that's still more IE oriented) It also comes with WYSIWYG handheld authoring and everything else Opera's rendering engine sup…
