In a past rant, I talked about Microsoft's decision to close its DRM servers for its MSN Music service, rendering all of the music bought from the online store next to worthless. Luckily, it turns out that Microsoft listened to what was being said by the online community and they have decided to keep the servers online. They have extended the date from the previous cut-off of the 31st of August 2008 to at least the end of 2011. This is great news for anyone that used the MSN Music service before it closed, but still it is not as good a sol…

In my opinion, DRM has always been broken. Locking customers into a certain player or into a certain piece of software severely limits what they can do with the files they have legally bought (a disadvantage that illegally obtained tracks conveniently don't have). This is taken to a whole new level when the customer is denied access altogether to the tracks they have legally purchased. MSN Music, which is now shut down, was used by a fair amount of people. The tracks that were purchased all came with Microsoft's PlaysForSure DRM protection…

Finally, Microsoft is getting on the ball and improving Internet Explorer; a browser that lied dormant for so many years is finally receiving regular signs of improvement. Of course, because Internet Explorer did not improve standards-wise for so many years, it remains far behind other browsers, such as Opera and Firefox. However, Microsoft has recently announced the development of Internet Explorer 8 and they have released a beta version of the browser. IE8 shows a number of CSS improvements, although it still is lagging behind Opera and Fi…

The International Organisation for Standardisation has rejected Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) document format as an international standard. The Open Document Format (used in OpenOffice.org) is already an international standard. Late last week, the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) nullified its vote for the Microsoft document standard. Earlier, Microsoft had been accused of offering benefits to partner companies to vote in support of OOXML. However, the SIS denies any connection between the accusations and the nullification. A se…

This is Microsoft's answer to Google Maps. A blog post gives us some more information: Microsoft has launched MSN Virtual Earth, a new service which combines mapping with local search to answer user queries. Read the press release here. MSN Virtual Earth provides detailed street-level maps and point-of-interest information for the United States. Later this year it will incorporate bird's-eye-view imagery that shows cities, landmarks, and more from a 45-degree angle view (we told you about some of these features a month or two ago). …

Just yesterday the Norwegian government announced plans to move completely over to open source products in 2006. Instead of the typical Microsoft Office they'll be using open source file formats for all government activities. Been on TV writes 'The Norwegian Minister of Modernization today at a press conference in Oslo declared that proprietary formats will no longer be acceptable in communication with government. He also calls for all parts of government to have a plan ready by 2006 for use of open source solutions. Taking great care not t…

Recently Microsoft reported that when installing Netscape 8, Internet Explorer has issues rendering XML pages. According to Microsoft they're working out the issues with Netscape. As a quick solution they advised to uninstall Netscape. Typical. Anti-Microsoft activist have already criticized the corporation for poor marketing skills, attempting to keep users with Internet Explorer. They claim that the error is on Microsoft's behalf and that they're using it as an excuse to keep users. We also learn that Netscape, who claims to be a se…
