Youtube have announced this week that they will not be supporting Internet Explorer 6 in future development. Instead, they encourage IE6 users to upgrade to Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 8, or Mozilla Firefox. This announcement has caused developers all over the Internet to claim the death of IE6 now that all of these popular websites (Youtube, Facebook, and Digg are the prominent ones) no longer plan to support it. However, I sadly must say that Internet Explorer 6 is going to be around quite a bit longer. You see, the mass of people …

There are a lot of web browsers on the market today, with a lot of marketing text and hidden agendas clouding any real evaluation of each browser. Even at Lowter, we heavily lean towards Opera. All of the graphs and speed tests are the worst, with each data set showing almost entirely different results, always skewed towards a particular browser. However, I found a great article on Maximum PC that gives a pretty detailed and fair review of the major browsers on the market. It compares the browsers on the rendering engine, the user interfa…

The Choose Opera blog posted a funny little chart about typical web browser users of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Apple Safari. It is funny, especially the Apple Safari row, but the chart also has a little accuracy in my opinion. IE users are generally either not informed or stubborn about switching to a better browser. Opera users tend to be a little elitist, but only because they're using the better browser (I do use Opera myself). Power users of Apple Safari are almost certainly using it for the "Private Browsing" feature, …

If you have not heard already, Microsoft has released a public beta version of Internet Explorer 7. This is the first update to IE's internal rendering engine in years. IE7 Beta 2 brings the browser enhanced security features and a remodeled interface with the popular tabbed browsing feature. The main change in IE7's rendering engine is that it better understands the hacks long used by developers to apply specific styling to IE only. Now IE7 understands these hacks, but it has not fixed the rendering mishaps the hacks were fixing. Micros…

NetApplications (keeping track of stats for an estimate of 40,000 websites) reports that Internet Explorer has somewhat recovered from the never-ending downwards spiral it seemed to be in these last few months. User base was moving away from this browser, which hasn't been updated for years. Mozilla Firefox's market share became as high as nearly 10%, but now IE strikes back and Firefox's market share has decreased to 8.07% compared to 8.71% in June. Internet Explorer went from 86.56% to 87.2%. Safari grew a bit towards 2.13%, but Opera (…

Just today Microsoft announced that they would be including extended support for RSS in Windows Longhorn, the next version of Windows due next year. Not only will Microsoft be adding an RSS reader to Internet Explorer, but they'll make it easier for software developers to easily integrate RSS into their applications. Currently all major web browsers contain a method for reading RSS. Opera and Firefox have both had RSS support for as long as most of us can remember. Safari recently received a stylish RSS reader in the latest version, inclu…

We all know that Microsoft was suppose to give full support for Windows 2000 users until 2010, but I'm starting to question that. In a recent post on the IE blog we find out that Microsoft will not be releasing IE7 for Windows 2000. This has led to huge criticism of Microsoft. Internet Explorer 7 is suppose to be released for Windows XP, as far as we know. With recent Microsoft actions I'm expecting to see Microsoft's typical marketing method, where they only give updates to the most recent platform, which forces users to upgrade. In t…
