Google Analytics is one of the better services available to track the traffic on your website. Any passionate webmaster, like myself, is constantly checking their statistics. I came across a fantastic application called Analytics App that brings Google Analytics to your iPhone, for those people who need to check their website stats even when they are on the go. The application also works on an iPod Touch. I have not tried out this application myself because I do not use Analytics, but I have read some good reviews about it. It certai…

As is typical at the end of each year, we're going to make some predictions about next year and technology. I'm going to start with my five predictions and Ethan will add his five in a separate blog post tomorrow. At the end of 2009, it will be interesting to see who got what right. Microformats Prediction: Microformats will be incorporated into more websites; however, few people will make use of the extra data at all. Microformats have started to pick up steam in 2008 and are just starting to be used on mainstream websites. I think…

The Official Gmail Blog announced today the availability of themes for Gmail! They look pretty snazzy, I must say so myself, and certainly look leaps better than the default Gmail interface's colours. The new themes are being rolled out to all Gmail accounts in the next few days, so if you don't see the new Theme tab under Settings don't freak out. You can read the blog post to see a grid of some of the cool new themes that are going to be available. I'm just waiting for my account to be upgraded! Hurry up Google I want to try out the ne…

Apple Understands Design Better than Google

Google's new Android mobile platform is said to pose a real challenge to Apple's growing dominance of the US smartphone market. However, after simply looking at various screenshots of Android, it is easy for me to say that Android is not a real threat to Apple, at least yet. Apple understands design, which is why people find their products visually appealing. Even the smallest detail Apple attends to. Everything is crafted to the pixel, especially on the iPhone. Apple's attention to detail is amazing. Google Android, on the other hand, la…

After all the fuss about Google Chrome, you can't help but feel that it's just hype and that it won't end up being as good as originally promised. I must say, however, that after reading through the comic I was pretty excited. I don't want to get into the debate about whether Google should have their own browser, as well as give money to support Firefox. However, I do think that it's a great thing that a wider selection of browsers has opened up recently: first with the arrival of Mozilla Firefox and now with a high profile release from Goog…

Google Announces New Web Browser

Today Google, using a comic, announced that they have been developing their own web browser called Chrome. Basically, Chrome is Google's answer to improving web browsers and they have some pretty good ideas. The comic explains everything pretty well, but to list a few key points: The browser is focused on each tab being "separate". Each tab runs in its own process so that if it crashes the entire application doesn't go down along with it. Plus the technical setup of the tabs (what they describe as a "sandbox") makes them more secure. …

A few days ago there were posts all over the blogosphere about the new Cuil (pronounced "cool") search engine that was suppose to "take down" Google. Apparently, Cuil was founded by an old Google engineer with knowledge about their search algorithm and Cuil was going to produce better search results than Google. It took about three hours for everyone to figure out how much Cuil sucks. The search results are not even close to relevant, especially the random images they somehow associate with the search results. When I searched for "Ethan…

In this series of blog posts, I'll be showing you useful little titbits that can really help you to improve how you use your time online. They will range from simple little tips to online applications that will all improve your productivity. For the first part in this series, I'm going to show you one of my favourite online applications: Google Reader. One Internet technology that is beginning to take hold is RSS (Really Simple Syndication). It is simply a file (or feed) that gives updates about new content on a website. To view these RSS…

This week I have been working to migrate much of my data to online services, particularly my email, my RSS feeds, and my calendar. Before, I had been using Apple Mail, iCal, and Vienna to manage all of these services, which pretty much tied the data to my main iMac. However, whenever I went to use another computer (particularly my iBook), I was left without this crucial data, so I decided I wanted to move the data to a more centralised available location: online. The primary inspiration to move my data online came from a blog post over at Ze…

It is said that click-fraud will destroy Internet advertising. This is more than true. Companies like Google take steps to help ensure against click-fraud, and protect their massive advertising profits. However, there are often workarounds that users find; many about which the advertising networks do not seem to care. I came upon a good article about AdSense traps and their affect on the advertising market, primarily Google AdSense and AdWords. AdSense traps are revenue earning techniques that are easily deemed as click-fraud, but are le…

After the huge hype of every person and their mother looking toward buying a stake in AOL, a transaction has finally taken place. Google has purchased a 5% stake in AOL for $1 billion, securing its profit stream from Google ads featured in AOL. Google's profit from AOL makes up 10% of its overall profit. Previously there were rumors of AOL planning to switch over to Microsoft, but was stopped in its tracks with gracious gifts from Google. According to Google, AOL will have a preferred placement in its search engine. At the time this is m…

Today marks seven years of Google, praised by some and criticized by others. Google, the search engine giant who has been organizing the vast Internet's contents into one location, is slowly making its way towards one of the most powerful companies in the world. Some believe that they're aiming to take over the world, while others just enjoy their great services. While Google may seem like the perfect company, if you haven't read the How Much Do You Trust Google? series you really should take a look: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Alas, …

Google AdSense users are now able to manage their ads through an all new interface. Along with the new layout, Google made modifications to their Terms & Conditions for the AdSense program. The new interface offers the same capabilities as the previous interface. The only difference is the updated design with smoother colors and larger fonts. Overall, it makes a nice change to the dull interface we were use to. Even though the new design is nice, it won't help advertisers make more money. Still sometimes a new look is more encoura…

Today a blog entry was released about a Google secret, and it was instantly Slashdotted. In order to help the author preserve bandwidth, and in case you cannot view it, here is a copy of the entry: It's one of the best kept secrets of Google. It's a mystery on Webmasterworld. Also in Europe (France) they don't know what to expect from that odd URL http://eval.google.com. Click it and you get ...nothing. The site reveals itself only if you have the proper login and if you use a network known by Google. Residues of Eval.google are found on t…
