There are a lot of web browsers on the market today, with a lot of marketing text and hidden agendas clouding any real evaluation of each browser. Even at Lowter, we heavily lean towards Opera. All of the graphs and speed tests are the worst, with each data set showing almost entirely different results, always skewed towards a particular browser. However, I found a great article on Maximum PC that gives a pretty detailed and fair review of the major browsers on the market. It compares the browsers on the rendering engine, the user interfa…

Recently, I was working on a project that utilised Webkit's CSS transforms to create a cool effect as a little extra to anyone viewing the page in Safari. Firefox 3.1 will also introduce CSS transforms to Firefox. However, Webkit uses the -webkit-transform property and Firefox uses the -moz-transform property. The question I ask is: what is wrong with just transform? Do we really need proprietary CSS properties? Isn't that entirely counterintuitive to web standards? Basically, the answer boils down to that, yes, proprietary CSS properti…

The Choose Opera blog posted a funny little chart about typical web browser users of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Apple Safari. It is funny, especially the Apple Safari row, but the chart also has a little accuracy in my opinion. IE users are generally either not informed or stubborn about switching to a better browser. Opera users tend to be a little elitist, but only because they're using the better browser (I do use Opera myself). Power users of Apple Safari are almost certainly using it for the "Private Browsing" feature, …

Matt just recently posted a blog entry about Opera 9.5, so I figured I would post an entry about the also newly released Firefox 3. Be forewarned, I am a hardcore Opera user, so I am not super familiar with Firefox. However, on a whole, I can say that Firefox 3 seems like a step in the right direction and it improves on a number of issues that plagued Firefox 2. The general changes include: New theme Implementation of Gecko 1.9 Page zooming New bookmark manager New download manager Improved password manager New address bar Numero…

Mozilla's development community is finally attending to one of the largest, if not the largest, technical problem with the Mozilla Firefox web browser: memory. Over the years, each version of Firefox has used more memory and has leaked more memory due to poor programming. Users find that Firefox runs like molasses if left running overnight or if the user is browsing with a large number of tabs. Detailed on this blog, the memory fixes should be present in Firefox 3.…

Recently, when coding Lowter's new layout, I ran into an issue trying to use absolute positioning on a <legend> tag. I was attempting to apply these particular styles to it: legend { left: -2000px; position: absolute; width: 990px; } I wanted to hide the <legend> tag from visitors on a certain form. Using display: none would not have sufficed because then screen-readers would have ignored the form instructions I wanted them to read aloud. The stylings worked fine in Opera, Safari, and Internet Explorer. The brow…

For the release of Firefox 1.5, the Mozilla organization is planning a large-scale marketing plan to promote the usage of the open source web browser, Firefox. According to Christopher Beard, the vice-president of products at Mozilla, the mass marketing plans will involve the vast Firefox community, as did Mozilla's original New York Times marketing venture. Their new marketing plan will have users posting videos of why they like Firefox. Mozilla is also planning to turn Mozilla.com into a consumer-orientated website, changing it from its …

The browser wars are always continuing, with every web browser spitting out a new feature every time we turn our heads. Opera 9 Preview 1 Opera software released a preview version of Opera 9, code name Merlin. The interface mainly remained the same, with the main new item being a bookmark button in the address bar. NetApplications (keeping track of stats for an estimate of 40,000 websites) reports that Internet Explorer has somewhat recovered from the never-ending downwards spiral it seemed to be in these last few months. User base was moving away from this browser, which hasn't been updated for years. Mozilla Firefox's market share became as high as nearly 10%, but now IE strikes back and Firefox's market share has decreased to 8.07% compared to 8.71% in June. Internet Explorer went from 86.56% to 87.2%. Safari grew a bit towards 2.13%, but Opera (…

Ever wished that you could take your browser of choice wherever you go? That way you don't have to use Internet Explorer? I've found methods to get both Opera and Firefox on a thumb drive. Both work fine and make a nice way to have a good browser with you at all times. Opera megamanXplosion at Sitepoint.com posted some great instructions on how to get Opera on your thumb drive. It also guides you through setting the cache to go on the current computer and for Opera to be offered to you on the drive's startup menu: Installing Oper…
