Last month, Adobe released BrowserLab, an online tool to help web developers easily preview their websites in multiple web browsers without needing to have each browser installed. You simply input your website's URL and it shows you how your website renders in Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. Furthermore, it has an overlay feature that enables you to see two renderings on top of one another so that you can identify even the most minute differences. This feature is poorly named "Onion Skin View". browserlab_1.jpg|Screenshot of Adobe…

For those of you using the popular code editor TextMate, I have come across a great theme that is geared towards web developers. Zachary Johnson has developed a TextMate theme just for web development that assigns specific highlighting and colouring to each web technology (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP). Most web documents contain a mixture of code, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. However, Textmate does not naturally handle this scenario of multiple code types in one document very well. This is where Zachary's theme comes into play. …

Awhile ago, I found a nice web development website called Smashing Magazine. The vast majority of their content consists of top 10, top 50, and top 100 lists of information and tools that are of interest to web designers. Most of these lists are generally not of interest to me; however, one of them really stood out as being a useful list that I could use. The list is of their top 50 PHP tools, ranging from debugging tools to PHP frameworks, is particularly useful. One of my favourite tools that is listed is one that I've just began using ca…

Integrating your website into the social bookmarking scene can help to increase your traffic and to build up more outside links to your website. The difficulty in doing this is that there are so many social bookmarking websites that it is nearly impossible to keep up with them. Granted, some websites are obviously more popular than others, but, if possible, you don't want to potentially exclude someone just because they use a smaller social bookmarking website. In comes AddThis, a service that provides you with a single button that han…

On the forums, Eugene (laserlight) pointed out a new website called Stack Overflow that is gaining some momentum in the development world. Stack Overflow is a "collaboratively edited question and answer site for programmers". Personally, it reminds me of Digg with wiki capabilities, but geared towards programming. The site works by someone asking a programming question, people answer that question, other people revise the posted answers, and then people vote on that question. It sounds kind of complex, but the system allows for "good" q…

Version control is an important aspect of a good development environment. Even a single-developer project should have a version control system in place to manage their code changes. However, it is especially important to have version control for a project with multiple developers, to allow each developer to work on the project without screwing up everyone else's work. Unless you have your own server, you are going to have to find a company that offers hosted version control, probably for SVN or for CVS. Often these services are pricey (espe…

In the first part in this series, I showed you Google Reader. This time around I'm going to show you another useful, simple online application: Instapaper. Instapaper is a way of saving a page that you want to read later. For example, if you are browsing a news website and see an article that you want to read, but simply don't have time to read it right then, you can save it to Instapaper and read it later. You don't have to worry about keeping tabs open or about saving pages to your bookmarks. To add pages to Instapaper, you simply need…

They will range from simple little tips to online applications that will all improve your productivity. For the first part in this series, I'm going to show you one of my favourite online applications: Google Reader. There are very few conversation-worthy code editors for OS X. Most code editors for OS X provide rather simple functions, but not enough capability to handle larger volumes of code and a multitude of files. Luckily, Apple offers Xcode - an integrated development environment that can handle a wide variety of programming languages - which is included freely with most Macs. Xcode is intentionally for OS X programming - Carbon, Cocoa, etc. - but it also works well with web programming languages such as PHP and Perl. Xcode's true ability shine…

Good bug tracking software is hard to come by these days. Most systems cost too much or they are too bloated. Yesterday, Olate released a new bug tracking utility, Arctic. Arctic is an effective tool to monitor bugs, feature request, to-do items, and more. Unlike other bug systems, such as Mantis, Arctic does not bother with unnecessary features. You get the bare-bone basics in an extremely easy to use environment. However, with the custom field feature you have the ability to expand need be. Excited, I gave Arctic a trial run. I do…

If you are a web developer it is likely that you commonly use FTP to upload files to your web host. An FTP client allows one to easily transfer their files between their computer and an FTP server. There are a bundle of different FTP clients with varying features and capabilities. The second version of SmartFTP, a popular FTP client, was released late last week. Compared to the previous version, SmartFTP 2 boasts an updated, sleek interface as the main change. Another fantastic feature is the ability to place two browsing windows adjacen…

I recently came across a very nice collection of utilities for a lot of things you can do on your computer. Personally I find the network related tools most interesting. For example there is FastCache, which can save the IP of any address you visit for a couple of days in the HOSTS file (which Windows only does for a few seconds). So for sites you visit quite a lot, like Google, Wikipedia (and Lowter? :-) ) you immediatly start connecting to the server which saves almost a second of DNS lookup, providing a definite speed improvement. Anot…

Yep, that's right, I'm posting something Firefox related. So you want to get your Firefox faster than it is by default? This is the ideal tool. For me, it really increased Firefox's performance. Not that it's faster than K-Meleon or Opera now, but well, that's not the most important reason either of us uses one browser over the other I think in this era. :-) FireTune for Mozilla Firefox v1.x was developed for an easy and fast optimization of your browsing experience with Firefox. It is based on a collection of popular and well working opti…

June 13 - The Fedora Project quietly released Fedora Core 4 (Stentz), the latest release of the popular, robust Linux operating system. Fedora Core 4 includes GNOME 2.10, KDE 3.4.0, Firefox 1.0.4, OpenOffice.org 1.9.104, and a 2.6.11-based kernel. The screenshots of the new software included in Fedora Core 4 are quite slick. You can read more, and view screenshots, on RedHat's website. I personally plan to install this release on my computer. It includes most applications that I'll use and has a nice selection of drivers and packages a…
