Redesigning as ususal.

So i'm making a new layout for myself, as usual.

Got pretty much everything coded in what i hope is valid css, works fine in chrome/firefox at least but i'l test that more when it's done.

Not quite sure how i'm going to do the placeholders for the thumbs though, the only part i haven't really finished either.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

It just looks kind of bland to me.  I think it might look better if you used different background colours for the sidebar or something.

I think it's a nice clean look, but the header does give it a bit of a "bland" look as Ethan put it. I think the rest is alright though.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

Well I can see how maybe the side content could use a different shade background color, but that's an easy fix anyway.

When I look at the screenshot the header looks pretty bland I suppose, but I don't think it is a problem in full view, but we'll see when i get it all up.

I'l probably be finishing the first draft today.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

Just so everyone knows you can still view it in fullscreen by viewing the image directly (just drag it to the tab bar in Opera).  PunBB shrinks it down so that it fits in the topic box, but it's only done via CSS.

Wth, I posted, got double post, then i edit one post and it edits both posts, strange bug.

Anyway, I got it uploaded, still haven't done anything with the thumbnail area, going to fix that then gona think about some color changes and replacing those hideous G and B icons to something more subtle.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

The background image on the menu must not be loading or something.  Without the image, it just looks like the top part is oddly not aligned with everything else.

No there are no background images, I decided to remove it. Was thinking about aligning the menu/head with the lower layers but haven't given it a try.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

I'm thinking of removing the menu as well, have an idea for navigation that could work out very well or very shit, gona throw up a mock on photoshop when i'm bothered.

~~

Also, how do you think the markup/css looks? When I stopped web design people were still mostly using tables so I feel that maybe i'm overcomplicating with some of my methods, any obvious things that stick out?

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

Your markup looks okay, but you might try using lists where appropriate.  For example, for your gallery listing, maybe use something like:

Code:

<ul id="gallery_news">
    <li>
        <h3>Title</h3>
        <img src="" alt="" />
        <p>Description</p>
    </li>
</ul>

If you have a lot of information about each gallery piece, then use a definition list or something.  Remember all the other tags HTML has for more semanticness!  Headers and things for sure.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

Well each gallery piece is in an individual div, would you still use a list if it's only 1 item? (as in your example)

I can see the benefit and i'l probably start using lists for much more, but i've never seen it used for 1 item.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

Oh no, you would use it for all of them.   I just only used one list item as an example. smile

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

Specify the language.

You should put your banner image in a <h1> element and I think your alt text would be better if it simply said Ian Hansson's Portfolio, or something to that extent.

You could get rid of your javascript by using some CSS if you so desire. It'd make the image change work when javascript is disabled and it'd allow you to get rid of the javascript. I think more people have javascript disabled (except on trusted sites) than you might expect.

Your <p class="postnumber">Gallery Post 1.2 <span class="title">Title</span> </p> kinda stuff would probably be more semantic if you you threw it in an <h2> or an <h3>.

Lastly I'd try to use UTF-8 for encoding, but as long as you keep in western European languages/English I don't suppose that's a problem.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

I decided to use javascript instead of sliding doors because sliding doors is just plain annoying tongue It's really just for college work at the moment so not too worried about it being disabled.

Will change the language (never heard of that one before) and put the banner in a header.

The titles and all that is going to be redone when i ad content but yeah that sounds like a cleaner idea.

Thankses.

I always did like your art work, post about the website once you got some content up. In overall, I like the design, easy, clean and sexy at the same time.

Re: Redesigning as ususal.

I don't know if i'm going to be doing any actual artwork on the site, I might but it's not the plan currently, mostly just going to be college projects.

I'l see though, if I don't then i'l lob them up on my deviantart. http://teapoted.deviantart.com
