AddThis Social Media Button

Integrating your website into the social bookmarking scene can help to increase your traffic and to build up more outside links to your website. The difficulty in doing this is that there are so many social bookmarking websites that it is nearly impossible to keep up with them. Granted, some websites are obviously more popular than others, but, if possible, you don't want to potentially exclude someone just because they use a smaller social bookmarking website.

In comes AddThis (external link), a service that provides you with a single button that handles integrating your website into about two dozen social networking and bookmarking websites. The service is free and only takes a few minutes to setup.

When the user hovers over the button, they are provided with a small box that presents some of the more popular social bookmarking and networking websites.

However, the user has the option to select "More" and get a larger list of services. When the user clicks on one of the services, AddThis exports the current page's URL to that particular service. There is also a nice stats page to view the button's usage.

Again, AddThis is free, quick to setup, and a huge time saver. Check it out (external link) if you want to integrate your website into all these new social bookmarking websites.

  • It's an interesting service but it's just a shame the button is so ugly and doesn't imediatly explain what it does without beginning to use it.

  • I disagree, I think that it explains what it does because of the del.icio.us and Digg icons that people who use these websites are quite familiar. They could have a slightly prettier version. There are some customisation options, but I haven't looked into them myself.
