What's in Store for Lowter in 2009

Woot! As you may have noticed, Lowter has a new layout to start off the new year! Make sure to delete your browser's cache so that any cached CSS doesn't interfere with the new layout! We have a lot of great things planned for this year, but our main focus is to improve the content quality and frequency on Lowter. The new layout is the start of these improvements. We have a lot of work ahead of us, especially with the large amount of legacy content that desperately needs rewriting, but I think that we are off to a great start for reaching all of our goals this year!

The main goal of the new layout is to simplify the massively complex website that Lowter has become over the years. Back in October, we launched a redesigned homepage to simplify and to highlight our content offerings, but it really didn't go far enough. It really needed to be simplified even more. The new layout simplifies a lot, primarily by eliminating separate listings for articles and blog entries in areas like the front page and category pages. We kept the same colour scheme and used a similar menu bar to make the layout feel more like a progression than like something entirely new.

Also, the markup and the CSS styling for the new layout is a lot simpler, making future updates a snap. It works better across browsers and screen sizes too, without all the complex CSS code that strung together the old layout. The markup is much more semantic too. Overall, the layout, in my opinion, looks great and is a huge improvement to the back end as well.

In the next few months, we are going to be working on upgrading the forums and revamping the entire comment system. We want to integrate the forums and the rest of Lowter better. As I stated earlier, we are also going to be working mainly on improving our content and working to cover more web-development topics.

It's going to be a great year at Lowter and we hope that you'll stick around to see all the great improvements become live! If you experience any problems with the new layout or have a suggestion of any kind, feel free to post a comment below or to post in the forums. Happy new year!
