Opera Releases 10.0 Alpha 1!

Start page of Opera 10.0 alpha

As many of you may have guessed by now, we are pretty big fans of the Opera (external link) web browser here at Lowter. We certainly like Opera for its solid set of features, but especially for its superior web standards support. A new Opera version is always exciting for me because of the constant improvement of Opera on all levels. Two days ago, Opera released Opera 10.0 Alpha 1 for Windows, Mac OS, and UNIX.

Opera 10 passing the Acid3 Test

The biggest improvement is the upgrade of the Presto rendering engine of Opera, which now passes the Acid3 Test (external link). Here are all of the major improvements of 10.0 so far:

  • Presto 2.2
  • 100/100 on the Acid3 Test
  • Auto-update
  • Inline spell checker
  • Improvements to Opera Mail (including composing rich-text emails)
  • Widget improvements on Linux

Overall, there have been no visual UI improvements to Opera 10 yet. Most of the improvements are behind-the-scenes, especially with performance. Finally, Opera now has an inline spell checker, one of the few features most other browsers had that Opera did not.

Download the new alpha (external link) and give it a spin! I'm still just happy that Opera is the first browser to have a publicly available build that passes the Acid3 Test!
